Acadia National ParkAcadia National Park can take a week or more to fully explore by automobile. If you are hiking or cycling, you can spend a lot more time. The main part of the park is located on Desert Island which also is home to the towns of Bar Harbor, Southwest Harbor, and Northwest Harbor. Bar Harbor is the largest of these towns and has the most in the way of accommodations and dining. The other towns provide a little less congestion. You can also camp in the park with the appropriate reservations and fees. A user fee is charged for the use of the park between May and October. Be sure to purchase your vehicle placard before you enter the park. Much of the park is closed on a seasonal basis (the winter). Believe me, you would not want to drive up or down Cadillac Mountain in icy weather. The park has a 'loop road' which runs in a circle around the park. There are a number of scenic attractions along this road. Much of the road is one way so you might want to plan your travels somewhat. The other factor to consider is the weather. You can drive up to the top of Cadillac Mountain and, if the weather is clear, get a spectacular view of the surrounding countryside. If it is foggy or rainy, it probably isn't worth the trip to the top.
The park offers opportunities for a wide variety of outdoor activities and sightseeing. Some of the major attractions include. Cadillac Mountain - You can drive, hike or bike to the top for some truly spectacular views of Desert Island and the Bar Harbor area. See our panoramas taken from the top of the mountain. Carriage Roads - John D. Rockefeller built 57 miles of roads and 17 bridges throughout the park. These roads are closed to vehicles but are open for bicycling, horseback riding, hiking and cross country skiing. Echo Lake - This is a lake and sandy bathing beach with changing facilities for swimming. Thunder Hole - A natural rock formation that make a sound like thunder and provides some impressive water sprays. Sand Beach - A sandy beach with changing and showering facilities.
