Bass Harbor Maine

Bass Harbor is located on the southern end of Desert Island. The harbor is known as one of the top lobster ports in Maine.

It is a terminal for the Swans Island and Frenchboro ferries. There is a working lighthouse for Blue Hill Bay that is located in a part of Acadia National Park.

The Bass Harbor Lighthouse

If you go, be aware that the structure you see at Flat Iron Road and Harbor Drive is not the Bass Harbor Lighthouse. To viist the lighthouse, take 102A/Harbor Drive  south  from Bar Harbor. Look for a small sign for Lighthouse Drive.

There is a fair amount of parking there. Keep in mind that the keeper's house is off limits. Public restrooms are located at the end of the lot. To get to the lighthouse follow the path downhill about 100 yards. The path is paved and does not have any steps.

It is a bit hard to get pictures of the lighthouse. Quite often people tend to cluster at the base. A simple polite request was all that was required to get a clear picture. If you look toward the bay from the restroom area, you can just see the top of the light.
