Southwest Harbor is a small town on Desert Island near Bar Harbor and Acadia
National Park. It hosts a number of Bed and Breakfasts and The Clermont, a
historic hotel. The town offers some spectacular views of it's main harbor which
is crowded with yachts and boats of all types. The view shown below is of the
less crowded entrance to Somes Sound which is the only Fjord in the United
States.
While the town is a small town, it is not in a remote location. You are
within easy driving distance of Bar Harbor which offers a lot of shopping and
dining. The town itself has a number of of restaurants that, of course, serve
fresh lobster and seafood and some small shops.

Accommodations - You can choose between one of many Bed and
Breakfasts or you could stay at the Claremont Hotel.

The Claremont Hotel in Southwest Harbor
The Claremont Hotel dates back to 1884. As of 2008,
the hotel apparently does not have air conditioning. However, for the most part,
the cool breezes from the sound will keep you comfortable.

The Inn at Southwest
Getting there. Southwest Harbor is a little off the beaten path. The
roads can be a bit crowded during the high season. The main intersection in town
is a bit of a challenge in that it only has a blinking red light and not a real
traffic light. If you are entering the main road from the side road, you are at
the mercy of your fellow motorists for the most part.
